Who We Are

The United Methodist Church is part of a Wesleyan movement, with roots in eighteenth century England when John Wesley and his brother Charles started many Methodist Societies.   The Wesleyan movement now claims more than 18 million members of various Methodist churches worldwide.   The United Methodist Church was formed in 1968 when the Evangelical United Brethren merged with the Methodist Church.   With 8.5 million members, the United Methodist Church, is the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States.

The Onaway congregation has had a continuous presence in Onaway since 1887, when a Methodist Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was formed.   In 1962 we moved into our current facilities.   In many ways we are a "middle of the road" congregation.   Our worship tends toward the traditional but employs a blend of contemporary music along with traditional hymns.   The church draws worshipers from Black Lake, Onaway and the surrounding area, and as far south as Canada Creek Ranch and  Atlanta.   Children are included in the worship service until they leave for Sunday School following the "Small Talk."   Holy Communion is usually celebrated on the first Sunday of the month, and is open to all who wish to participate.

The church serves a Community Dinner on the 1st Wednesday of the month.   The meal is free and open to the public.
